FAQ

RIAA stands for The Recording Industry Association of America.

It is the trade organization that supports and promotes the creative and financial vitality of the major music companies…investing in great artists to help them reach their potential and connect to their fans.

RIAA History: Launch of the Gold & Platinum Program

  • “RIAA unveils the Gold & Platinum Awards Program to honor artists and set a commercial standard for success in the music marketplace. The program trademarks the Gold record and formalizes the industry practice of awarding artists with plaques memorializing their sales successes. Sixty years and more than 17,000 certified musical titles later—from vinyl records to cassettes to CDs to downloads to streams—the iconic Gold & Platinum brand remains the preeminent form of recognition for success in the music marketplace.” — RIAA Gold & Platinum About Page

RIAA Certification

  • 150 streams = 1 track sale
  • 1500 streams = 10 track sales
  • 10 track sales = 1 album unit
  • Therefore, 1500 streams = 1 unit/album sale

Billboard Charts In order to “reflect the disparity in value between a song streamed” on a premium account vs a song streamed on a free account, Billboard uses a different rule to measure a unit/album sale.

Units are defined as followed for streaming:

  • 1,250 streams on a premium account = 1 unit/album sale
  • 3,750 streams on a free account = 1 unit/album sale

“Royalty bearing” and “non-royalty bearing” streams are two industry terms used to explain which streams generate revenue (money), and which streams will not. The exact definition of each term varies from a streaming platform to streaming platform, but here are the common themes.

Royalty-bearing streams, generally speaking, have to achieve the following:

  • Streams greater than 30 seconds in duration

Some examples of non-royalty bearing streams are:

  • Streams less than 30 seconds in duration
  • Suspicious streams (eg. bot-generated streams)
