RIAA Certification
- 150 streams = 1 track sale
- 1500 streams = 10 track sales
- 10 track sales = 1 album unit
- Therefore, 1500 streams = 1 unit/album sale
Billboard Charts In order to “reflect the disparity in value between a song streamed” on a premium account vs a song streamed on a free account, Billboard uses a different rule to measure a unit/album sale.
Units are defined as followed for streaming:
- 1,250 streams on a premium account = 1 unit/album sale
- 3,750 streams on a free account = 1 unit/album sale
“Royalty bearing” and “non-royalty bearing” streams are two industry terms used to explain which streams generate revenue (money), and which streams will not. The exact definition of each term varies from a streaming platform to streaming platform, but here are the common themes.
Royalty-bearing streams, generally speaking, have to achieve the following:
- Streams greater than 30 seconds in duration
Some examples of non-royalty bearing streams are:
- Streams less than 30 seconds in duration
- Suspicious streams (eg. bot-generated streams)
